Kildare County Council urges public to stay weather aware during high temperatures and thunderstorm risk
Kildare County Council is advising the public to remain weather aware over the coming days, following the meeting of the National Severe Weather and Flooding Coordination Group to review forecast conditions for Ireland.
The current forecast points to two separate weather-related risks: exceptionally high temperatures and the potential for heavy thunderstorms, which may bring intense rainfall, localised flash flooding, poor visibility, large hail and damaging wind gusts.
The public is encouraged to monitor Met Éireann forecasts and warnings at www.met.ie and to be prepared to take action if conditions deteriorate locally. Updates are also available through official news and social media channels.
Kildare County Council will continue to monitor the situation and liaise with relevant agencies as required.
Public health advice during high temperatures
- Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids.
- Stay in the shade where possible and avoid going out or taking part in strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
- Use suitable sun protection, including UVA and UVB sunscreen.
- Never leave people or animals unattended in vehicles, even for a short time.
- Check in on older neighbours, people living alone and anyone who may be more vulnerable during hot weather.
Thunderstorm and flooding advice
- If you hear thunder, move indoors immediately.
- If lightning develops, stop outdoor activities and seek shelter.
- If heavy rain begins, avoid driving unless necessary.
- If roads become flooded, turn around and find another route.
- Never drive, walk or cycle through floodwater, as the depth and condition of the road surface may not be visible.
- If you need emergency assistance, call 999 or 112.
Water safety and fire safety
Anyone planning to spend time near, in or on the water is reminded to take extra care, supervise children at all times, check local conditions and carry a means of calling for help.
The public is also reminded not to light fires in or near woodland or open countryside and to report any fire immediately by calling 999 or 112.
Kildare County Council is asking everyone to stay informed, follow official advice and take practical steps to protect themselves, their families, neighbours and communities during this period of severe weather risk.
